Exodus 4 – there was a good bit of discussion about Exodus 4:24-26: “24 At a lodging place on the way, the Lord met Moses[a] and was about to kill him. 25 But Zipporah took a flint knife, cut off her son’s foreskin and touched Moses’ feet with it.[b] “Surely you are a bridegroom of blood to me,” she said. 26 So the Lord let him alone. (At that time she said “bridegroom of blood,” referring to circumcision.)”
Not surprisingly, we weren’t the only ones who found this passage odd. There has been a good bit written about this. I appreciated Dr Michael Heiser’s explanation – I’m linking a 30 minute Youtube video from him (for those who’d prefer to listen) and a blog post (for those who prefer to read) below.

In a nutshell, it appears that before Moses could represent God in Egypt, he needed to be fully and correctly circumcised. Zipporah’s circumicision of their son and application of the blood to Moses served as a substitute for Moses’ own circumcision, which would have delayed his return. I appreciated the deeper dive into the customs of the day and the difference between Egyptian and Hebraic circumcision, and other instances where the “correct” type of circumcision was required.

Exodus 7 – Seeing the Egyptian magicians perform signs in response to Moses and Aaron is a good example of the reality that the little-g gods of the Old Testament were more than wood and clay. Here are some materials related to the Divine Council Worldview that explains why this is the case if you’re interested in learning more.
